Amniotic fluid examination

The examination of amniotic fluid, as the name suggests, is the extraction of amniotic fluid from the mother. When the amniotic fluid is pumped, it is assisted by ultrasound, avoiding the fetus and placenta, selecting the appropriate site, and then using a probe into the uterus to extract a small amount of amniotic fluid test.

Pregnancy amniotic fluid examination is an intrauterine diagnosis method. That is, fetal amniotic fluid was taken from the mother’s uterus, fetal colony cells were examined, fetal chromosome karyotype analysis, to understand whether the fetus has genetic disease. The implementation of this method can greatly reduce the birth rate of chromosomal diseases and some metabolic diseases.

Why do we need amniotic fluid?

Amniotic fluid is commonly used in fetal lung maturity, intrauterine infection detection and prenatal diagnosis.

Indications for amniotic fluid examination are as follows:

Determine fetal maturity. Many high-risk pregnancies need to know fetal maturity before induction of labor so as to choose the right time to give birth.

Pregnant women are infected with certain pathogens at the early stage of pregnancy, such as rubella virus, cytomegalovirus or Toxoplasma infection.

Prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities, congenital metabolic abnormalities and genetic diseases. Mostly in 16-21 weeks of gestation. If any genetic disease is found, it will be too late to abort pregnancy. However, normal amniotic fluid cells do not indicate absolute fetal health, there are still many fetal defects can not be detected from amniotic fluid.

Because the amniotic fluid is not completely safe for the fetus, if not the elderly maternal or family has a genetic history, should not be arbitrarily examined. If you have any doubts about amniotic fluid, you should consult with obstetricians and consider whether to do this test after analyzing its advantages and disadvantages.

Do you have amniotic fluid?

When amniotic fluid is pricked in, the abdomen aches for a short time, just like the pain of an injection; moreover, some people feel the contraction of the uterus when the tip of the needle passes through the uterus. But usually after one or two hours of rest, the uncomfortable feeling will gradually recede. After drawing off the amniotic fluid, there are the following points for attention:

1. On the day after the operation, it is best to rest, do not work, until the next day, after no discomfort, to resume the general routine.

2. If fever, persistent abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding and persistent vaginal fluid leakage occur within a few days after returning home, regardless of any discomfort, they should return to the hospital for treatment.

3. Most of the amniotic fluid can be successfully cultured chromosomes, but about 1% of the amniotic fluid, cell culture failure, the hospital will inform you to come back to the amniotic fluid again.

Amniotic fluid steps

In principle, amniotic fluid test is the most suitable for fifteenth to 16 weeks of pregnancy.

1, check before amniotic fluid.

Before the amniotic fluid is officially extracted, the doctor helps the pregnant woman to do an ultrasound examination to determine the size of the fetus, the number of gestational weeks, the location of the fetus and the number of fetuses.

2, the process of amniotic fluid extraction

(1) find the most suitable location for placing the needle.

(2) sterilize skin for pregnant women

(3) spread sterile sheets on the belly of pregnant women.

(4) Ultrasound guided gradual penetration of vertebral puncture needle No. 20 or 22 into the selected amniotic cavity

(5) to confirm that the puncture needle is already in the amniotic cavity, the negative pressure is used to extract the amniotic fluid.

(6) 2 ml of amniotic fluid must be discarded (for fear of maternal cell contamination).

(7) about 20 ml of amniotic fluid is extracted.

(8) placing the inner tube of the puncture needle back.

(9) return the whole puncture needle.

(10) put a bandage on the pinholes of the belly.

3. Complete amniotic fluid examination.

Please take a rest for 10 minutes outside the amniotic fluid examination room. If you feel comfortable, you can go home.
