Amniotic fluid turbidity

How is amniotic fluid turbidity formed?

The baby will drink amniotic fluid from the 10th week of gestation, after drinking the amniotic fluid through the intestinal tract to filter out the floating matter, through the kidney to form urine, accumulated in the bladder, and then through the urethra discharge. The impurities in the intestines will be excreted after the baby is born, which is meconium. Amniotic fluid is transparent and colorless under normal conditions and can see fetal fat. When a fetus discharges meconium into amniotic fluid and causes turbidity, it is called meconium contamination of amniotic fluid, which is commonly called muddy amniotic fluid. Amniotic fluid turbidity is usually found in pregnant women undergoing B-mode ultrasonography, and dense and dense spots can be seen. There are also cases of amniotic cavity infection during pregnancy, excessive fetal fat, pregnant women with cholestasis syndrome can also cause the formation of muddy amniotic fluid.

Because the fetus and amniotic fluid have a close relationship, can well reflect the physiological and pathological state of the fetus, so experts suggest that we must do a good job during pregnancy examination. Generally speaking, amniotic fluid I degree turbidity or even II degree turbidity, fetal heart is always normal is not necessarily fetal distress. The most worrying thing in clinical is the III turbidity of amniotic fluid, which often indicates fetal distress and should be terminated early.

Causes of cloudy amniotic fluid

There are different sources of amniotic fluid at different developmental stages of the fetus. In early pregnancy, amniotic fluid mainly comes from the plasma components of the embryo and is colorless. As the fetal organs begin to mature, the composition of amniotic fluid slowly increases the fetal urine, respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, umbilical cord, placental surface and so on, will appear slightly turbid phenomenon. Under the B-mode ultrasound examination, thick and dense light spots can be seen.

Common causes of cloudy amniotic fluid are the following:

1. Fetal fat mixed in amniotic fluid, if this situation caused by muddy amniotic fluid, generally will not cause harm to the fetus, so do not need to worry too much.

2. Meconium mixed with amniotic fluid, if this situation may lead to fetal hypoxia in the uterus, then need to inhale oxygen, specific treatment measures should be carried out after the diagnosis of professional doctors.

3. Cholestasis is mixed with amniotic fluid. The main substances in amniotic fluid are fetal fluid and brittle hair. Simple turbidity usually has no effect. If it is cloudy, it predicts fetal abnormalities and requires immediate delivery.

Because amniotic fluid is the living environment of the fetus, so the occurrence of turbidity can not be ignored, should be as soon as possible to the hospital to find out the cause.

How to manage the cloudy amniotic fluid?

Amniotic fluid turbidity is usually caused by fetal fat or meconium mixed with amniotic fluid, other cases of cholestasis. If it is simply caused by fetal fat caused by mild turbidity, the problem is not big, belong to the normal situation, generally will not cause harm to the fetus, do not need to do special treatment.

If it is caused by meconium muddy amniotic fluid, this situation shows that the fetus may have intrauterine hypoxia, the need to breathe oxygen to supplement oxygen. The latter should be treated immediately, following the advice of a professional doctor for examination or oxygen inhalation, and should be immediately monitored to see if the fetal heart rate is normal to estimate fetal hypoxia. At the same time, the left lying position should be taken and oxygen inhaled to increase the blood supply of placenta and alleviate fetal oxygen supply. If the situation is serious, it is necessary to terminate the pregnancy in advance.

Can amniotic fluid turbidity produce spontaneous labor?

If there is amniotic fluid, pregnant women are most worried about the safety of the fetus in the abdomen. Amniotic fluid mild turbidity at the end of pregnancy is due to the presence of fetal metabolites in amniotic fluid, which is normal. If there are amniotic cavity infection, excessive fetal fat, cholestasis of pregnant women, fetal hypoxia, amniotic fluid will be significantly turbid. The choice of delivery mode, need specific analysis of specific circumstances, amniotic fluid turbidity need to closely observe the fetal situation in utero, to the hospital for detailed examination, clear the cause, symptomatic treatment. If it is slightly turbid, the doctor will advise the pregnant mother to give birth; but if it is more serious, the doctor will advise the pregnant mother to give birth by caesarean section.

Babies in the abdomen if severe hypoxia, is the need for early abdominal dissection, if inhaled muddy amniotic fluid, can cause asphyxia or other diseases. For the sake of your baby’s health, it’s better for your mother to be cautious, and give birth or caesarean section according to your doctor’s advice.
